Computers & Technology: Things
To Do With Random Electronic Devices
That
You May Have Lying Around The House
1.
“i uSe
ArCh bTw"
Grab a device. Any device with
a screen and a keyboard will do. Google “[device name] linux”.
Unless the device is particularly
obscure, there’s almost certainly a Linux distribution/derivative
for it. Try installing it (and if
you’re feeling particularly brave, try customizing it).
2.
It
runs DOOM!
Grab another device (or grab the device you
installed Linux on in entry #1), and figure out what
OS it’s running. Find a DOOM source
port for that particular OS, install/sideload it onto your
device, and run it! Optionally, you can
also post it to /r/itrunsdoom for that sweet, sweet karma.
3.
Blast
from the past
Install Windows XP onto your
modern-day computer!
This sounds difficult, but unless your
PC is super high-end and REALLY new, it isn’t. If you can’t
find drivers for your video card and
the poor screen resolution or low colour depth bother you,
you can use VBEMP (a universal display
driver for Windows NT) to make it look better.
Disclaimer:
I really wouldn’t recommend using Windows XP long-term on a modern PC; it's
fun to use just for shits and giggles
but you will NOT have a good time trying to get unsupported
hardware to work properly, and if
you’re using this webpage you probably don’t need more
stress in your life than you already
have.

Pirate Adobe Photoshop. They deserve it. No
software is worth $600, no matter how much time
and effort went into making it. Fuck
it, pirate Sony Vegas too. Pirate all the overpriced software
even if you will never use it. Stick it
to the ManTM.
Disclaimer:
I toooooootally don’t condone piracy. This is 10000% a joke, guys. Don’t
pirate. You
wouldn’t download a car, would you?
Don't download software you don’t own, or
else I’ll have to
come to your house and step on you ;)

Jailbreak/root your phone. Trust me, if you
haven’t done it already, it's totally worth it. You get
tons of new features at your
fingertips, and you can customize the absolute shit out of literally
everything. (P.S. Cydia is and always
will be the best iOS package manager)

Blast
from the past, part 2
Wanna go back to the good old days of MSN
Messenger/AOL Instant Messenger? Download
Escargot
or AIM Phoenix! They’re both (pretty much)
fully-functional reimplementations of the
classic AIM and MSN protocols, and they
work exactly like the originals did. If you wanna add
me, my Escargot address is lord.lakitu@gmail.com, and my AIM Phoenix screen
name is
pkstarstorm69.

Dig your old iPod out of storage and install Rockbox onto it. It allows you to just drag ‘n
drop
your music files onto your iPod like a
flash drive, it has built-in theme support, and best of all?
IT RUNS DOOM, BABY!
